    Position Description

     

    DEFINITION:

    Under the supervision of the Dean of Student Affairs and according to Division and/or College procedures and Board policy, the Disability Services Coordinator ensures compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. This individual coordinates services for students with disabilities by securing documentation, maintaining student files, providing referral resources and linkages to counseling and career services for students and by staying abreast of the latest laws governing disabilities. The Disability Services Coordinator works collaboratively with other College leaders by creating and sustaining a culture that promotes student learning and engagement.
     

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

     

    Receive direction from the Dean of Student Affairs.

     

    Exercise direct supervision over professional and clerical staff in Disability Support Services.

     

     


    Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

     

    ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS - Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

     

    Essential Functions:

     

    • Manage and coordinate day to day operations of Disability Services including but not limited to budget, in-take interviewing, follow-up meetings with students as needed, staffing, high school and extension site visiting, internal and external presentations, scheduling test accommodations, and generally being a resource for all students with disabilities.

     

    • Evaluate disability documentation from qualified professionals and determine student specific accommodation plans and consult with faculty, advisors, and administrators on implementation.

     

    • Possess knowledge and understanding in the areas of disabilities, disability laws and common academic accommodations.

     

    • Ensure that College faculty and staff are well-informed about laws governing students with disabilities and the types of academic accommodations students may receive by providing consultation.

     

    • Coordinate students’ academic, career, or personal support needs with the Advising Center, Counseling, Financial Aid, Career Services, or other student services departments.

     

    • Understand and analyze tests and interpret medical and psychological documentation.
       
    • Analyze student academic difficulties and situations to determine the best course of action resulting in coordinating and monitoring the use of academic accommodations.

     

    • Respect student confidentiality, maintain records, collect data, and prepare reports

     

    • Assist students with disabilities with activities such as obtaining information about the college and enrollment procedures.  

     

    • Coordinate placement testing and transition services for students who request academic accommodations.

     

    • Respond to the following legislated enactments:
      • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (P.L. 43-112)
      • Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Amendments (P.L. 101-336)

     

    • Identify, investigate, and/or develop and secure adaptive instructional materials and assistive technology for students with disabilities and train students in their use.

     

    • Serve as a resource person for disability related issues.
       
    • Collaborate with other areas of the college to address physical, academic, and electronic accessibility issues.

     

    Other Important Functions:

     

    • Prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.

     

    • Maintain good standing with applicable licensure board.

     

    • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

     

    • Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.

     

    • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.

     

    • Select, supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff.

     

    • Prepare and analyze administrative and statistical reports, statements, and correspondence.

     

    • Gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion.

     

    • Organize work for timely completion.

     

    • Interpret and apply federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.

     

    • Conduct meetings in an effective and efficient manner.

     

    • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:

     

    1. standing or sitting for extended periods of time
    2. operating assigned equipment

     

    • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

     

    • making observations
    • reading and writing
    • communicating with others
    • operating assigned equipment
    • handling varied tasks simultaneously

     

    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

     

    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

     


     

     


    Qualifications

     

    QUALIFICATIONS: 

     

    Minimum Required: 

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in special education
    • Progressive managerial/supervisory experience
    • Minimum of three years in higher education servicing students with disabilities
    • Creative and energetic advocate for students with disabilities
    • Ability to successfully interact with stakeholders both on and off campus
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office application
    • Excellent written, oral, and organizational skills
    • Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (P.L. 43-112)
    • Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Amendments (P.L. 101-336)

    Preferred:  

    · Master’s degree preferred from an accredited college or university in Student Services/Development, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Public Health, Rehabilitation or other appropriate health-related area.  

     

    · Community college experience preferred
