African American Business Council
The African American Business Council is dedicated to driving the growth and success of Black-owned businesses by connecting attendees with business resources, professional development, business education, and networking opportunities. Our mission is to support and strengthen African American entrepreneurs and business owners, contributing to a robust and thriving business community in Wilmington.
Founded in 2018 by Tracey Newkirk and Chamber CEO Natalie English, the Council focuses on empowering African American-owned businesses and professionals, fostering economic development, and creating lasting business connections.

Participation & Eligibility
You do not have to be a member of the Wilmington Chamber to attend the African American Business Council meetings. The Council is open to African American entrepreneurs, business professionals, and others committed to advancing minority-owned businesses in the Wilmington region. Whether you are just starting out, scaling your business, or looking to expand your network, you are welcome to participate. Social Gatherings with Impactful Speakers
These events bring young professionals together to connect, learn about our community and economy, and build meaningful relationships. Gatherings feature insights from senior-level business and community leaders, creating space to step outside your routine, hear fresh perspectives, and meet new people. A core focus of the Council is helping Wilmington’s talent grow into confident, capable leaders. Programming & Activities
The Council curates a mix of events and initiatives throughout the year to engage and empower the African American business community, including:
- Quarterly Meetings – Focused discussions on business development, leadership, and resource sharing.
- Educational Workshops & Panels – Sessions led by industry experts and local leaders on topics such as marketing, financial planning, access to capital, and government contracting.
- Networking Mixers – Opportunities to connect with peers, mentors, and potential partners in a welcoming, supportive environment.
- Signature Year-End Celebration – A special event each December to review the Council’s accomplishments, honor outstanding contributions, and set the vision for the year ahead.
