• President's Report from February 23, 2026

Wilmington continues to experience strong economic momentum. Our workforce is growing, key industries are expanding, and our region is earning national recognition. Most recently, Wilmington was named one of the South’s Best Metros for Tech in 2026 by CommercialCafe, citing exceptional tech company growth, nearly 98% growth in tech employment, and a strengthening fintech ecosystem.

With growth comes both opportunity and responsibility. As more people and businesses choose to locate here, we must continue to work together to address increased traffic, infrastructure demands, housing availability and long-term land use decisions.

Our 2026 Chamber Legislative Agenda has been published and will guide our advocacy efforts at the local, state and federal levels. It prioritizes infrastructure investment, protection of our region’s quality of life, workforce development initiatives, and policies that maintain a strong, competitive business climate.

Our Public Policy Committee meets tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. and will feature Rebekah Roth, planning and land use director for New Hanover County. Roth, a southeastern North Carolina native, brings more than 15 years of experience in comprehensive planning and development regulation. She led the county’s 2016 Comprehensive Plan and managed the Unified Development Ordinance update completed in 2020.

The draft Destination 2050 plan, available here, will guide how development is reviewed and approved in our community. Following a recent public hearing, commissioners indicated they will provide additional feedback and consider adoption at a future meeting. The Public Comment Portal, available here, will remain open until the Board takes further action.

Transportation projects identified through the WMPO and NCDOT are also advancing toward implementation. While construction may create temporary disruptions, these investments are essential to sustaining long-term economic competitiveness.

Finally, civic engagement remains critical. Early voting continues through Feb. 28, with Election Day on March 3. We encourage you to research the candidates and support those who will advance policies that strengthen our region’s business environment.

Strong growth requires steady leadership, disciplined planning and engaged business voices. Thank you for your continued involvement and commitment to Wilmington’s future.
