Save the Date for MED Week 2022!
Cape Fear Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week presented by the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce recognizes and celebrates the achievements and impacts of minority entrepreneurs across southeastern North Carolina, and provides opportunities for networking, expanding, and strengthening businesses.
The activities are part of the national observance of Minority Enterprise Development Week, created by presidential proclamation in 1983. This local event series began at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and was hosted with the help of community partners to recognize the economic impact of minority- and women-owned businesses.
In preparation for the 2022 Cape Fear MED Week activities, the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce and planning committee community partners seek involvement from the vast array of resources within the Cape Fear Region. Individuals who are interested in sharing knowledge and talents to help developing businesses advance to the next level are encouraged to answer and submit a questionnaire. The deadline to apply is April 22, 2022. To submit a proposal or read about what kind of programs we are looking for, click here.

You know that everything starts with an idea. All part of an analysis that we often do intuitively of a need that we see that exists in our community. When the entrepreneur detects this need, it is when we have the potential to generate a business idea. From then on, if the entrepreneur is brave enough and makes the right decisions, a small business will emerge from that idea, which can grow and even be replicated, not only in the community in which it is located but throughout the region. But, in the end, we always have the question: How did she/he do it? How did she/he managed to make his/her business successful? That is what we are going to talk about in this panel. We want you to be inspired by them, and see that it is possible! Sign up for this session to hear what these Latino business owners have to tell you about the path they traveled and still travel as merchants and entrepreneurs.

Looking at your business as a valuable asset that serves its customers and their varying needs is a concept that requires voices of all kinds. The way we discuss and approach diversity, equity & inclusion in the workplace is changing. It wasn’t long ago that we even recognized diversity and inclusion as an important element within the business, and prior to that, the goal was simply diversity for the sake of checking a box. Those changes in terminology reflect a shift in attitude, however, and knowing what those terms mean is the first step in building a people-forward future of work. Taking time to be innovative in how you incorporate these elements within your business, you show that you genuinely care that all of your employees belong and are engaged.
