• Session 2 - Education Day

To begin the Second Session of the Leadership Wilmington Program, the class started bright and early with small group tours of the various schools around New Hanover County. From Carolina Beach Elementary to Trask Middle, the class was able to cover nine (9) different schools across the County, with each school supporting varying ages and instruction models. With these hands-on experiences, members of the class were able to gain valuable insights about the successes and challenges of each school. And, once back at the Chamber of Commerce, the various groups shared their insights and experiences with the entire class.

After a celebration of Taco Tuesday with lunch from Burrito Shak, the class heard from a number of knowledgeable experts and stakeholders that work in the education space around the County. Jane Morrow, Executive Director of Smart Start, began with an enlightening discussion regarding the importance of proper early education in the growth, development, health, and wellbeing of kids. Then, Dr. Christopher Barnes, Superintendent of New Hanover County Schools provided significant insight into the New Hanover County School System, along with a few laughs for good measure.
After a quick break, the class heard from Erin Easton, Vice President of Economic & Workforce Development and Career & Technical Education at Cape Fear Community College. Along with an illuminating discussion regarding CFCC and its various educational offerings, Erin provided a hands-on tour of the barbershop, dog grooming (complete with new four-legged friend), boat building, and outboard engines programs.

To round out the day's sessions, the class enjoyed a presentation by Dr. Christine Davis, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. The class was able to properly celebrate Teal Tuesday by learning about UNCW's substantial program offerings, as well as the significant work done by the Division of Student Affairs.
The class then ended the day with delicious appetizers, beverages, and continued conversation at Bonita Latin Fusion & Cocktails. As might be expected after such a fulfilling day, the class is no doubt looking forward to their next Leadership Wilmington session on November 4th.
