• Public Policy Committee Resolution - July 28, 2020

    RESOLUTION
    SUPPORTING THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE PAG AND THE NHRMC BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO NEGOTIATE A PARTNERSHIP WITH NOVANT HEALTH, UNC HEALTH, AND UNC SCHOOL OF MEDICINE; AND TO CREATE A COMMUNITY FOUNDATION WITH A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE PROCEEDS TO INVEST IN THE FUTURE OF OUR REGION
     
    New Hanover County leaders and NHRMC are united in the belief that our community deserves the highest quality health care, access to a comprehensive array of services, the latest technology, and the support they need to stay healthy; and
     
    Whereas, NHRMC is the largest employer in New Hanover County employing over 7,000 people; and
     
    Whereas, Novant Health is a growing health care system with a presence in several southeastern states employing over 29,000 people; and 

    Whereas, NHRMC offers world-class health care including specialties such as cardiology, neurology, community wellness and rehabilitation; and 

    Whereas, Novant Health offers world-class health care including specialties such as behavioral health, cancer, vascular health and neurology; and, access to affordable health care and health equity for all in our community makes us more competitive for jobs and the people who fill them; and, Novant Health is committed to maintaining and supporting current NHRMC staff and plans to develop and implement a plan establishing the current NHRMC as a regional headquarters in the service area.
     
    Whereas, Novant Health shall assume and maintain a clinical and academic affiliation with the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and UNC Health; and
     
    Whereas, $1.25 Billion of the net proceeds will be distributed to a newly established public-benefit foundation which shall be designated to provide financial support to public primary, secondary, and post-secondary education, health, and social equity, community development, and community safety; and
     
    Whereas, an endowment of that size can have a transformational impact on New Hanover County and its citizens.
     
    Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that the Board of Directors of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce supports the unanimous recommendation of the Partnership Advisory Group and the overwhelming majority of the NHRMC Board of Trustees to move forward with negotiations with Novant Health on a partnership.  The Board of Directors further supports the creation of a public-benefit community foundation as an independent, tax-exempt, non-profit corporation.
