• What Is Leadership Wilmington

  • The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce has been presenting the Leadership Wilmington program for 37 years with over 750 graduates.  Existing leaders, budding community leaders, and volunteers are encouraged to apply for this elite program.

For one day a month for 8 months, participants get an in-depth view of community issues, develop skills necessary to assume leadership roles, and are exposed to community involvement opportunities. Sessions include History/Arts/Culture; Health and Human Services; Public Education; Justice; Environment; Government; Business, and Infrastructure.

Leadership Wilmington provides class members the opportunity to grow professionally and to meet key community leaders. You will also work with your class to organize Work on Wilmington, the community’s largest one-day volunteer service day.  Work on Wilmington brings people together to roll up their sleeves and tackle non-profit improvement projects, in just four hours with amazing results.

    STRUCTURE

Participants are required to attend the orientation and three-day/two-night Opening Retreat on August 24-26, 2022, and nine (9) Class Days from Sept. 2022 – May 2023 on the second Tuesday of each month from 8-5:00 pm (full day, including lunch).  Attendance at all sessions is required. Please note the April and May sessions are on the first Tuesday and the May session is only a half day.

Graduation is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, 2023.

Each session will be facilitated by LW Alumni, key leaders, and professionals.  Professional development sessions are included as part of the curriculum.  You will be encouraged to speak freely from your experiences in political, social, cultural, education, and economic facets of the community, helping you to develop a deeper understanding of the community.

Those interested in the Leadership Wilmington program need to make a serious commitment. Employers must agree in advance to grant participants time off from their duties to attend all sessions. Upon graduation, you will be presented with your personalized Leadership Wilmington plaque and will be welcomed into the Leadership Wilmington Alumni network and invited to join the LW Alumni Council.

In order to graduate from the program, attendance is required at all meetings and events mentioned above. Participation in Work on Wilmington is required. A draft of your Leadership Philosophy must be submitted to the program director. Your Forte Communication one-on-one meeting must be completed.
